Nugget #40 ~ The 3rd of 5 Nuggets For You To Act On During 2025

The Future Will Come Ready or not : The Present is the Key to Success

Albert Einstein, a man synonymous with visionary thinking, once said, "I never think of the future—it comes soon enough." At first glance, this quote might seem counterintuitive, even dismissive, especially in a world obsessed with forecasting, planning, and preparing for what lies ahead. Yet, as with most things Einstein said, there’s a deeper wisdom hidden within these words: the most effective way to shape the future is to engage fully with the present.

Living in the Moment: A Personal Perspective

Consider Rachel, a multi-disciplinary systems engineer tasked with overseeing the integration of a complex digital twin for an aerospace project. The end goal is daunting: a seamless, real-time representation of the entire system. Faced with the enormity of the project, Rachel finds herself spiraling into overanalysis—worrying about future hurdles, market shifts, and stakeholder reactions.

Then, during a casual lunch, her mentor shares Einstein’s quote: "I never think of the future—it comes soon enough." The words click. Rachel realizes she’s so consumed by future challenges that she’s losing sight of the most critical work—what she can do today. She shifts her focus to immediate tasks: refining the model architecture, engaging her team in solving smaller integration bottlenecks, and ensuring today’s progress is strong and stable.

The result? The project starts moving at a smoother pace. Each day’s focused effort compounds into meaningful progress, and when future challenges inevitably arise, her team is better prepared to face them—not because they predicted everything, but because they were ready to adapt from a position of strength.

What can YOU PRO-ACTIVELY do to promote this sentiment in your business environment?

The Future in Business: Actions Speak Louder Than Plans

In business, the fixation on predicting future trends can often paralyze organizations. Companies invest heavily in forecasts, strategy workshops, and speculative planning. But predictions alone don’t create change—actions do. The future is shaped by what we do NOW, not by how well we can guess what might happen later.

You remember NOKIA, the the Cell Phone Leader, now is a NO MORE-KIA! In its heyday, Nokia spent considerable time and resources planning for the future. Yet, its downfall came not because it lacked foresight but because it failed to act decisively on the changes happening in the then present—like the rise of touchscreens and app ecosystems.

Contrast this with Netflix, which didn’t wait for a perfect future scenario to pivot from DVDs to streaming. Instead, it acted on the technology and consumer behavior of today, continuously iterating and improving. By focusing on immediate execution, Netflix was ready for a future that came soon enough.  Where are you with this thinking?

What This Means for Leaders

Leaders today are challenged to reconsider how they allocate their energy. It doesn’t dismiss the importance of planning, but it warns against over-prioritizing the speculative at the expense of the actionable.

For leaders in technology, and other multi-disciplinary domains, this is especially critical. In these fields, long-term visions often hinge on short-term execution. Too much management and too little visionary, transformative Leadership maybe? Building a futuristic AI-driven supply chain or a robust digital thread isn’t achieved by dreaming—it’s achieved by solving today’s technical challenges, collaborating across disciplines, and staying attuned to real-world feedback. This needs real Transformational Leadership.

Practical Takeaways: Leading in the Present

  1. Anchor Yourself in Action
Ask yourself and your team: What can we achieve today that moves us closer to our goals? Avoid getting trapped in endless “what-if” scenarios and redirect energy toward immediate progress.
  2. Embrace Adaptability
Planning for every contingency is impossible. Instead, cultivate a team culture that thrives on flexibility and demonstrates mental agility. Equip your team to respond dynamically to the unexpected future rather than trying to predict every twist.
  3. Focus on Building Capabilities
The future belongs to those who are ready for it. Invest in training, tools, and technologies that empower your team to execute well in the present, giving them a foundation to handle whatever comes next.
  4. Let the Vision Guide, Not Overwhelm
A compelling long-term goal is valuable, but it shouldn’t overshadow the importance of daily work. Keep the vision in sight, but let the present drive your pace.

The Wisdom in Letting the Future Come

The future doesn’t arrive fully formed; it’s constructed one day, one decision, one action at a time. For leaders in fast-evolving industries, this perspective is both liberating and empowering. It can (and probably WILL happen sooner than you think)

When we shift our focus from a speculative future to the present, we become architects of tomorrow, not passive observers. The future will come soon enough—what matters is what we do before it arrives.
